Pets on Vacation

Fido is always everyone’s favorite family member, but he is often forgotten when planning travels.  There are only a few choices of what to do with family pets during vacation: hiring a pet sitter, kennel boarding, or taking them with you seem to be the most popular.  If you prefer to do the latter, here are some things to remember during your planning stages.

If it is at all possible to take your pets with you on vacation, then by all means do so.  Leaving your pets at kennels or with strange sitters will lead to separation anxiety and definite destruction of their surroundings.  Without you around, pets don’t always understand what is going on, and start to worry you may not come back.  If you must leave your pets at home, try to get a full-time sitter in your home to keep them company, or realize you will have to pay top dollar for a kennel that will treat them as well as you do.

When taking your pets on vacation, realize that driving times will be greater than normal, as bathroom breaks and hydrating your pet will be required.  Purchase a travel bowl to feed and water your pet at rest areas and gas stations.  Frequent stops for walks and playtime will ensure your pet’s physical and mental well-being, so plan accordingly.

Also pay attention to the travel space available for your pet.  Make sure there is plenty of room and a comfortable mat or bed for them to lie on.  Climate will also play an important part in your pet’s comfort.  Hotter weather will require more hydration, and colder climates may require a sweater for those without the proper coat.  Ensure that all vaccinations are up to date, and groom them before leaving for your entire entourage’s comfort.

Research your possible accommodations through a service like HotelsCombined.com.  Make sure you are reserving rooms only in hotels that allow animals and cater to their needs.  Invest in a collapsible crate to keep your pet in when they can’t come with you to a point of interest.  These crates are easy to clean and store, and keep your pet safe from environmental hazards while you are away.

Finally, plan activities that your pet can take part in during your trip.  Visits to parks and other pet-friendly areas will be much appreciated, and make them feel like a part of all the fun.  With a little planning and consideration for your pet, travels will be a fun event for the entire family!
